Polish grid.
« on: December 12, 2008, 02:27:04 PM »
Ok so how things are in Poland?
Well it's not so bad. First of all CCTV is not so common sight in our cities. I have this "luck" to live in monitored city. In short we have about 20-30 cameras on the crossroads and around court, police station and city council buildings. It's really not bad for 34 k. population. Of course there are many in shops, markets etc. but they haven't got acces to the web (internet is quite slow and expensive, for 514 kbps I pay around 12E/16$ month).
Basically in larger cities they are cameras above crossroads, roads, goverment buildings and crowded places (markets, squares, metro, stations etc.)
For more important part we are now in SHENGEN system, there are no borders with western countries but police, border patrol and authorities have acces to various information from european databases. Also revcently we got passports with chips.
ID's and driver licenses are in form of plastic card.
What else... If you want to hide, you can simply go to countryside or some small town.
Ok I can't remember anything else, if you have questions please ask.
huh...

So basically you can travel between countries with no id check?  Do you ever have to apply for a visa to travel?

Well there are no borders inside EU, but you theoretically must have ID or passport with you (any patrol can check you inside union/shengen country). We need visas to all countries outside EU or Shengen (Switzeland is in Shengen but out of EU for a example). And we need visa to travel to USA :P

Things are not bad, but it seems it may change a bit in the near future.
Since last year the government have implemented the biometric passports to all the people as a must.
It means every single application for a passport includes your full name, address, personal citizen number and your fingerprints.
Of course as long as your passport is valid, you don't have to be worried about anything, or maybe I should say - you didn't have to be worried - ? The latest news says that the government is planning to implement the new IDs with the same biometric data.
Probably, to make people more eager to change their valid ID cards to the new ones, there will be no fee for this.
